The theme of control surrounds this work in its comedic nature. Control in itself is constantly something that people attempt to grasp as it aligns with the human condition. In the work ‘Attempts at Control of the Institution’ the absurdity of people trying to control an entire institution is laughable. Throughout working as a staff member at the NGA during the Botticelli to Van Gogh exhibition the number of people (whom are often middle aged and more elderly white Australians) have adult tantrums and are often unable to comprehend the challenges that are faced whilst running such a sizeable exhibition. The 4 x A3 works utilise photoshop and found imagery online to create completely fabricated photographic images that warp perspective and shift the eye to the beady eyes and shouting mouths of the characters who have the audacity to complain in such a way. The quotes in the work are found in the google reviews from the NGA and the names of the so called ‘controllers’ as displayed at the bottom for the necessary exposure. The curatorial decision to place one of the images slightly skew is deliberate. This comments on the institution’s want of perfection and the skewed image is not aesthetically pleasing. The work utilises the ability to curate new imagery in photoshop and fabricate a scene that is warped (and controlled) in every way possible.
